Guest Blog: a chat with Alex Malouf

Tell us about who you are, and how did you get to know about Jehan and her photography?

I’ve known Jehan for a number of years, ironically from the time that she exhibited a number of her photographs in the United Kingdom. I had always wanted her to shoot a series of sets for me, and she was gracious enough to entertain my request.

Did you want to be in front of her lens?

Yes, I did. But I never knew that it’d be as much fun as it was!

How did she make you feel in front of her camera?

Jehan has a gift to put a person at ease and yet capture their energy and their intensity. From the get-go she knew how to make me feel like a natural in front of the camera. And I feel that this is reflected in how my images look.

What is the story of your picture with a vulture?

I’ve often been compared to Matthew McConaughey (yes, it’s true!). There was a wonderful photo shoot for Matthew in Esquire magazine which I wanted to replicate. We made it happen at the Al Maha Resort in the United Arab Emirates and we had a lot of fun (me and the vulture) in the process!

Share a funny incident during a Photoshoot!

Jehan also arranged an underwater shoot for me, as she knows I love my diving. She kept insisting that she’d bring a shark to the set off one of the beaches in the Maldives. Fortunately for me, no fish large enough to take a bite out of me turned up on the day, but she did give me a scare when she brushed my leg during the shoot. I still haven’t gotten her back for this!

The image was one of Jehan’s wonderful photo-manipulations. I wanted an image that would stand out and yet not detract from my blog’s content. Jehan took the picture, she worked on creating a picture that would be shared on every page of my blog. Even after all these years I love that image and would never change it.
